About

Community of Microbes lets you explore a colorful world of tiny creatures with augmented reality.

It’s a microbe’s world, and we’re just living in it.

There’s more to life than meets the naked eye — we are surrounded by a diverse and vibrant ecosystem of microscopic organisms. These creatures live in, on, and around us, shaping our environment in profound and often unseen ways.

From microbes in our dust that create life-saving pharmaceuticals to others that make squid glow and beer taste good, we interact with our tiny neighbors every day, even if we don’t know it.

We invite you to step into a colorful immersive world and explore these fascinating communities in an interactive and augmented-reality experience.

Community of Microbes was created by multidisciplinary artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya in partnership with microbiologist Dr. Anne Madden. The project was brought to life with the support of a diverse group of science advisors, designers, animators, developers, science writers and STEM advocates. The project is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

On October 25, 2019 our first exhibition will transform the Cooper Union Colonnade into a microbial wonderland.

We’ve created a visually dazzling and interactive experience that maintains the rigor and precision of the microbiology it is inspired by with the help of:
